Monster Energy Hints at Expansion into Web 3 with Four NFT and Metaverse Trademark Filings

Beverage company Monster Energy preparing for its expansion into Web 3 with four trademark applications for its branded digital goods and services filed.

All four applications were filed on 18 Feb through the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The first trademark is for Class 9, which covers “downloadable virtual goods in the field of beverages, food, supplements, sports, gaming, music, and apparel for use in virtual environments and worlds; downloadable multimedia file containing artwork, text, audio, and video relating to beverages, food, supplements, sports, gaming, music, and apparel authenticated by non-fungible tokens; non-fungible tokens; blockchain tokens” among several other items.

The second trademark filed under class 35 focuses on “online retail store services featuring virtual goods, blockchain tokens, digital tokens, non-fungible tokens, digital media, digital files, and digital assets; digital assets as part of a computer program” and more. 

Class 35 also includes “other retail items authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs)” and “provision of an online marketplace for buyers and sellers of virtual goods, blockchain tokens, digital tokens, non-fungible tokens”.

The third trademark for Class 41 covers “entertainment services, namely, providing virtual goods, blockchain tokens, digital tokens, non-fungible tokens, digital media, digital files, and digital assets” and “providing an on-line virtual environment for using, trading, and purchasing virtual goods, blockchain tokens, digital tokens, non-fungible tokens, digital media, digital files, and digital assets.”

Lastly, the fourth trademark under Class 42 is for “providing on-line non-downloadable software for managing, displaying, monetizing, buying, selling, trading, transferring, clearing, confirming, and authenticating virtual goods, blockchain tokens, digital tokens, non-fungible tokens, digital media, digital files, and digital assets” among others.

The USTPO has already approved Monster Energy’s trademark on stores featuring NFTs and digital assets while the rest are still pending. If approved, Monster Energy could possibly launch a marketplace for its branded virtual goods and NFTs.

Monster Energy’s trademark filings is one of the latest in a growing number of brands preparing to enter the metaverse and NFT space. According to data from Finbold, US NFT trademark applications have soared 552% over the last six months.

Some of the world’s biggest brands that have filed metaverse and NFT trademarks this month include McDonald’s, L’Oreal, and Hugo Boss, just to name a few.
