NBA legend Kobe Bryant is joining the metaverse. The deceased Hall of Famer’s family is launching non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and Web3 projects. According to a post published by Boardroom TV through their Twitter account, Kobe Inc filed three trademarks for the metaverse, including “Kobe Bryant,” “Mambacita,” and “Mamba Forever.”
On the Twitter post, Boardroom wrote “the legend of the Black Mamba and Mambacita lives forever.”
According to the description given by Josh Gerben of Gerben Intellectual Property, the trademarks “Kobe Bryant” and “Mamba Forever” will cover:
- Virtual and digital interactive representations of Kobe Bryant.
- Virtual and digital goods.
- Multimedia files, audio recordings, video recordings and image files.
- Virtual basketball courts, gyms, parks, and recreational facilities.
The products and services will be used for virtual experiences in the metaverse, as well as, for playing sports and sports training plus several other use cases.
Gianna “Gigi” Bryant who also died in the fateful crash with her father will have a similar representation in the metaverse through the “Mambacita” trademark, including the virtual and digital interactive presentation of herself, virtual goods, multimedia files, audio, etc, and virtual basketball courts.
Tweeting about the filing, Gerben said, the flings indicated an intent to offer “virtual basketball courts.”
The NBA has become a popular figure within the NFT and metaverse space, with Dapper Lab’s NBA Top Shot project among the most popular NFT collections in the sporting industry.
However, Kobe’s and Gigi’s array of Web3 projects are offering more than just a collection, bringing the celebrated Hall of Famer’s fans to the metaverse.
It is also one of the few projects launched to celebrate a legacy rather than for the sole purpose of exploring ways to engage with fans.
On Wednesday, the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers launched an NFT project dubbed “My Cavs Locker”, allowing fans to access collectibles dropped on a regular basis. And on Friday, the NBA unveiled the 2022 all-Star court NFT collection launched alongside a shoppable NFT art gallery.
While these projects are created to usher in new experiential avenues that fans can use to access exclusive offers, Kobe Inc’s project comes oozing with nostalgia as the NBA legend’s legacy is immortalized in the metaverse.
