McDonalds enters the Metaverse with 10 trademark filings

McDonalds the world-famous American junk food restaurant has suddenly jumped on the Metaverse bandwagon. This is the same company that only last month derided people who invest in Crypto via their Twitter account.

The fast-food giant announced that they had tendered an application for 10 trademarks in the Metaverse. these included “McCafé”, “McDonalds” and their logo. Furthermore, the application states that McDonalds will offer such services as “virtual food and beverages”, plus downloadable multi-media files including NFTs, videos, text, and audio files.

Another interesting application is 1C 041 which states their intention to hold “Entertainment services, namely, providing online actual and virtual concerts and other virtual events.”

We love the idea of virtual concerts and think they will be a big part of the metaverse. For instance, the Foo Fighters are to play a free virtual concert after the Super bowl on Sunday. The concert will be streamed on the ‘Foo Fighters Facebook and Instagram accounts, plus on the Horizon App’.

Additionally, they intend opening a virtual restaurant which will include home delivery.

McDonalds are just the latest big-name brand to hop on the metaverse and nft train. Some of the first to embrace and see the potential were high fashion clothing brands such as Gucci and Burberry.

Burberry hooked up with the Blankos Block Party to launch a set of fashion accessory NFTs in their fun game. These collectibles have steadily increased in price since they were first minted last year.

Moreover, ‘in July 2021, Coca-Cola teamed up with 3D creators at Tafi to host an auction for special-edition virtual ‘loot boxes’ of NFTs, which took in over $1m’.

So, is this the beginning of a stampede of top brands rushing to trademark their brands on the metaverse?

Well, Josh Gerben, trademark attorney at Gerben Intellectual Property, who broke the McDonalds news on Twitter, told Forbes that he fully expects all major brands to file the same. He stated, “I don’t think anyone wants to be the next Blockbuster and just completely ignore a new technology that’s coming.”
