Quick take:
- Netflix is working on a project to bring exploding Kitties to its streaming platform.
- The leading entertainment company will also create a video game based on the popular board game characters.
- Exploding Kittens pivoted to NFTs after partnering with Seattle-based Glowforge in January.
Online streaming giant Netflix is developing a TV show and a video game based on the popular board game “Exploding Kittens”. The company’s Netflix Geeked Twitter account revealed the main cast of the animated comedy series set to premiere later this year.
“Meet the cast of the new Netflix animated comedy series, EXPLODING KITTENS,” the company tweeted, adding the series producers’ names, “comedy legends Mike Judge and Greg Daniels.”
Netflix has recently pivoted to gaming and Exploding Kittens will be its first mobile game tied to NFTs.
The LA-based game maker partnered with Seattle-based 3D startup Glowforge to launch its NFT campaign and 3D collectibles. The company introduced 10 NFTs for its latest game card named “Happy Salmon”.
Netflix asked its community on Twitter earlier this year about their opinion on NFTs, in another hint, the home entertainment giant may be open to the idea.
Exploding Kittens launched in 2015. The company claims to have sold more than 18 million table-top games in over 50 countries. Netflix has purchased intellectual property from the game maker to licence their rights to the board game according to Dot.la.
Mike Moon, Netflix’s head of adult animation said the co-development of a game and animated series locks a new milestone for the company, which is looking to introduce new verticals to its streaming business amid rising competition in the space.
“We couldn’t think of a better game to build a universe around than ‘Exploding Kittens,’ one of the most inventive, iconic and original games of this century,” he said.
The new mobile game will be available to Netflix subscribers from May 2022.
Netflix is not the only production company to create a TV show based on characters tied to NFTs.
In January, Time Studios teamed up with Waheed’s Smilesssvrs and Doug’s Toy Boogers NFT projects to bring a kids’ TV show based on characters from the two collections. Last November, the producer had teamed up with Pablo Stanley to bring Robots NFT characters to mainstream TV.
Therefore, although Netflix has yet to declare its position on non-fungible tokens, its venture into gaming could see it slowly embrace the commerce around the trendy buzzword.
