OnlyFans Jumps into the NFT Space with Launch of NFT Profile Picture Feature

Quick take:

  • The feature was first introduced in December.
  • It was officially rolled out today.
  • It only supports NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain.

Online adult content subscription service OnlyFans has officially launched its new NFT profile picture (pfp) feature today. The company said that it first introduced the feature in December.

The London-based company joins social media giant Twitter in allowing users to display their NFT as pfp. Meanwhile, Reddit has been exploring possibilities in rolling out the same feature on its platform.

However, the feature only supports NFTs minted on the Ethereum blockchain. The NFT pfps will be displayed with an Ethereum icon to verify authenticity. It appears that OnlyFans has other plans in the NFT space, which the company is just taking the first step into.

“Our mission is to empower creators to own their full potential,” OnlyFans Chief Executive Officer Ami Gan said in a statement to Reuters. “This feature is the first step in exploring the role that NFTs can play on our platform.”

Founded by investor and tech entrepreneur Timothy Stokely in 2016 – who stepped down as CEO last December – OnlyFans saw a boom during the pandemic as those who became unemployed turned to the platform as a way to earn money. It allows content creators to receive payment from their “fans” monthly as well as via one-time tips and the pay-per-view feature.

Currently, the platform has over 170 million users and over 1.5 million content creators around the world.

In other news, YouTube’s CMO Neal Mohan elaborated on the platform’s position NFTs, echoing what CEO Susan Wojcicki mentioned in her letter to creators on Jan 25. In a blog post published today, Mohan wrote: “We believe new technologies like blockchain and NFTs can allow creators to build deeper relationships with their fans… There’s a lot to consider in making sure we approach these new technologies responsibly, but we think there’s incredible potential as well.”

Recently, it was discovered that Meta is reportedly planning to roll out NFT features on Facebook and Instagram. In December, social networking and microblogging app Parler announced its plans to expand into NFTs.

With the growing interest in the NFT space, it’s likely that a growing number of social networking and media platforms will join the fray in offering NFT features in the near future.
