Quick take:
- MEV (maximum extractable value) is a profit that validators or bots extract by targeting inefficiencies in the trade ordering mechanism.
- They include front-running, sandwich attacks and arbitrage and can leave those with limited resources disadvantaged.
- Sorella is emerging from stealth after debuting one of the MEV tools that it is building to address such challenges.
Sorella Labs, a Web3 startup building tool to address maximum extractable value (MEV) issues on Ethereum has emerged from stealth with a $7.5 million seed round led by Paradigm. The fundraising also attracted participation from Uniswap Ventures, Bankless Ventures, Robot Ventures and Nascent.
Maximum extractable value is a profit technique used by bots and validators with more resources to gain an unfair advantage over others. It targets inefficiencies in the trade ordering mechanism through three main strategies.
Front-running allows MEV actors to execute trades before others, while sandwich attacks allow them to trade before and after large orders. They can also capitalise on price differences across platforms using the arbitrage strategy.
The Ethereum network has been one of the most affected networks by MEV actors since completing the merge upgrade. Commenting on his company’s plans to address the problem, Sorella Labs co-founder and CEO Ludwig Thouvenin told The Block: “We knew that MEV was extremely pervasive on Ethereum, but it was crazy to see to what extent.”
Now his company is building two products, Brontes and Angstrom, with the former debuting on August 20.
Thouvenin described Brontes as an “open-source blockchain analytics tool that processes Ethereum blocks, classifies transaction actions and identifies MEV through pattern matching and analysis,” and compared it to an “open-source Etherscan with custom block analysis capabilities,” for more clarity.
Thouvenin believes his product is significantly different from other MEV solution developers like Flashbots. While Flashbots targets MEV infrastructure at the Ethereum protocol level, Sorella focuses on mitigating MEV at the application layer, he said.
