Quick take:
- The sale of Microsoft Paint-style cartoon wizards comes two years after they were inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain.

- Last month, the project raised $30 million to support projects building OP_CAT.
Bitcoin Ordinals project Taproot Wizards has revealed the auction date for the much-awaited Signature NFTs “magic internet JPEGs”. According to the report by CoinDesk, the project will auction 2,121 NFTs on March 25, with the initial offer made to buyers on a waitlist, with the Wizards not taken sold in a Dutch auction.
The sale of the Microsoft Paint-style cartoon wizards comes two years after they were inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain. Last year, the project also sold a collection of 3,000 “Quantum Cats” raising $13 million, which was earmarked to raise support for the Bitcoin improvement proposal OP_CAT.
OP_CAT is a short form for OPcode Concatenate or OP_CONCAT, which Taproot Wizards co-founder Udi Wertheimer describes as simple scripting for Bitcoin to enable automated and customisable transactions.
Last month, the project also secured $30 million ecosystem funding to support projects building OP_CAT, with Standard Crypto leading the round and Cyber Fund, Collider Ventures, Geometry, Masterkey VC, and Newman Capital participating.
Wertheimer has previously highlighted OP_CAT’s ‘flexibility’ as a major strength. “What I expect is that people are going to create tons of new protocols. Instead of having Ordinals and BRC20s, once per quarter, a new protocol like that shows up like the heydays of Ethereum or Solana, where people create new protocols on a daily basis.”
His project has been trying to meme OP-CAT into popularity and is using NFT sales to ramp up the campaign.
