Quick take:
- Ubisoft has unveiled its first blockchain-based game.
- Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, a player-versus-player tactical game where players use mythical champions to battle against each other.
- Ubisoft previously ran an experimental NFT game Ghost Recon Breakpoint in early 2022, before pulling the plug a few months later.
Ubisoft has unveiled its highly anticipated first blockchain-based game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. The French video game publisher made its first foray into web3 gaming in 2021. In 2021, it ran its first experiment with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in gaming with Ghost Recon Breakpoint, before ending the projects in April 2022.
Mainstream gaming companies are continuing to roll out blockchain-based games despite the perception that traditional gamers are against the move. The likes of Square Enix, NCSOFT and Jam City have all made strategic moves into the industry.
Jam City launched Champions: Ascension in December 2021, while Square Enix’s first NFT game Symbiogenesis is set to launch on Polygon. However, it remains to be seen whether Square Enix will press on with the plans following the departure of the Japanese entertainment giant’s pro-NFT gaming CEO Yosuke Matsuda amid a change of strategy.
NCSOFT invested $15 million in web3 infrastructure company Mysten Labs, the organisation behind the layer 1 blockchain Sui.
Ubisoft’s new blockchain game “Champions Tactics” will run on the Oasys blockchain. The video gaming giant is one of the node operators on the layer 1 blockchain network alongside fellow gaming companies Square Enix, Sega, and Bandai Namco.
Its first attempt at NFT gaming Ghost Recon leveraged NFT assets from the Tezos blockchain, which powered its Quartz platform.
Ubisoft describes Champions Tactics as a player-versus-player tactical game where players use mythical champions to battle against each other.
The game’s teaser trailer dropped on Wednesday, without showcasing much about the gameplay. However, players ballet each other while exploring the mythical legends of a utopian world called Grimoria.
Although the blockchain gaming industry has slowed significantly due to the effects of the bear crypto market, it boasts the highest level of on-chain activity with about 38% overall, according to a report by decentralised apps analytics and research firm DappRadar.
