Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov says the country is no longer pursuing plans for an airdrop. The Digital Transformation Minister said the country will instead focus on issuing NFTs to support its military activity in the war against Russian invaders.
Writing on Twitter, Fedorov stressed that Ukraine has no plans to issue any FUNGIBLE tokens.
“After careful consideration, we decided to cancel airdrop,” he wrote, adding that more people are offering their support to Ukraine amid the invasion.
The country’s official Twitter account had tweeted on Wednesday that it was issuing an airdrop as an appreciation of the immeasurable support it has received from the cryptocurrency community.
“Airdrop confirmed. Snapshot will be taken tomorrow, on March 3rd, at 6 PM Kyiv time (UTC/GMT +2 hours). Reward to follow! ” the account wrote, pinging Mykhailo Fedorov’s account.
The world has responded in numbers in support of Ukraine amid the raging war, with donations already into tens of millions. According to reports coming out in the last 24 hours, cryptocurrency and NFT donations have already surpassed $52 million.
Notably, the NFT community has raised more than $6.75 million through the recently launched decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO), dubbed UkraineDAO.
The organisation was founded by PleasrDAO members and NFT studio Trippy Labs, in collaboration with a member of the art collection group Pussy Riot.
The organisation minted and NFT of the Ukrainian flag, which it bought back through a service called PartyBid with funds raised from its community. The proceeds are being sent to Come Back Alive, an organization that donates supplies to Ukrainian civilians and military members.
It seems that some crypto enthusiasts were impressed by Mykhailo’s announcement that the country is cancelling the airdrop in exchange for an NFT drop.
Replying to Mykhailo’s tweet, @Cobie wrote, “This is the best rug ever.” Others said they might donate now, while another user made a joke out of it, writing “rugged by an entire country wtf”.
